PoE vs Wi-Fi security cameras: which should you choose?
For cameras that watch an entry point you cannot afford to lose, Power over Ethernet is the better choice, and Wi-Fi is the better choice when running a…
Security cameras and video doorbells compared on what matters day to day: picture quality, storage costs, and whether the app nags you into a subscription.
Resolution is rarely the thing that fails you. Most cameras sold today produce a usable daytime image, and the ones that disappoint do it at night, into a backlit doorway, or on a clip that started recording half a second after the person had already walked out of frame. Those problems come down to sensor size, infrared range and how the motion trigger is tuned, none of which appears on the box.
Storage is the cost people miss. A camera that records only on motion writes a fraction of what a continuous one does, and the gap is wide enough to change what hardware you need: a memory card in one case, a recorder and a drive in the other. Our camera storage calculator turns camera count, resolution and recording mode into gigabytes a day, so the answer is a number rather than a guess. Cloud plans then price the same footage per camera per month, which is where a cheap camera quietly stops being cheap.
For doorbells the wiring question comes first. A wired unit needs a transformer with enough power behind it and a chime that tolerates the load. A battery unit skips all of that and asks to be taken down and charged instead. Neither is the right answer everywhere, and each review says which door the unit suits.
False alerts get their own paragraph every time, because a camera that fires on passing headlights teaches its owner to ignore it, and an ignored camera is worse than none at all.
