A Wi-Fi-only alarm system goes silent the moment your internet drops, whether that’s a storm knocking out power or someone cutting the line outside. A cellular system keeps talking to the monitoring center over the cell network regardless, which is why most professionally monitored setups either run cellular-only or Wi-Fi with cellular backup.

Our take

If you’re paying for professional monitoring, get cellular backup. It typically adds $5 to $10 a month, and it’s the difference between an alarm that works during an actual break-in and one that only works when everything else is fine too.

This sounds like a minor technical detail until you think through what a power or internet outage actually looks like at 2am.

What happens to each system type when the power goes out?

A pure Wi-Fi system needs three things to keep functioning: power to the router, power to the modem, and an active internet connection. Lose any one and the base station can’t reach the monitoring center or your phone. Most systems have a battery backup for the base station itself, so sirens and local alerts still work, but the notification to you or a monitoring center stops.

A cellular system, or a Wi-Fi system with a cellular backup module, keeps a separate radio connection to the cell network. As long as the base station has battery power (usually 12 to 24 hours) and there’s cell coverage at your address, alerts keep going out even with the internet and electricity both down. This matters most during storms, which is exactly when break-ins and false alarms both spike.

It’s worth noting a home battery backup, generator, or UPS doesn’t fix the internet half of this problem. Your router might stay powered, but if the outage is upstream at your ISP, a Wi-Fi-only system is still cut off no matter how much battery you throw at it.

Does every system offer cellular backup?

Not automatically, and not always for free. SimpliSafe includes cellular connectivity as the primary connection in most of its kits, which is actually the opposite of the DIY norm, most competitors lean Wi-Fi-first. Ring Alarm and Abode both offer cellular backup as an add-on, usually bundled into their higher-tier monitoring plans rather than available a la carte. Check the specific plan tier before buying, not just the brand name. It’s common for a company’s base plan to leave cellular off the table entirely, with backup connectivity reserved for a $10-more-a-month tier. Is Wi-Fi-only ever fine?

For self-monitored setups where you’re the only one getting alerted, sure. If your phone buzzes with a camera clip or door-sensor alert and you’re the one deciding whether to call anyone, losing that alert during an outage is a real gap but not a catastrophic one, especially in an apartment where the biggest local risk (a fire, a gas leak) usually has its own separate detector anyway.

It’s a bigger deal for professionally monitored systems, since the entire value proposition is that someone else calls for help when you can’t. A monitored system that goes dark exactly when the power’s cut is arguably worse than no monitoring at all, since you might assume it’s working. What about cell coverage at my specific address?

Cellular backup only helps if there’s actual signal where your base station sits. Most systems use a specific carrier’s network for their cellular module (often Verizon or AT&T’s IoT network, regardless of what carrier your personal phone uses), and a base station in a basement or a rural area with weak coverage can struggle the same way your cell phone does in those spots.

Test this before committing to a full contract. A number of DIY brands let you order a trial kit or return within 30 to 60 days, so you can confirm the base station gets a solid cellular signal at your actual install location, not just wherever the marketing page assumes you live.

What about landline and mesh Wi-Fi setups?

A handful of older monitored systems still support a landline as the connection, which sidesteps the internet-outage problem entirely but has its own weakness: a cut phone line disables it just as completely, and copper landlines are getting harder to find outside of legacy contracts anyway. Most current DIY brands have dropped landline support altogether, so it’s mostly relevant if you’re inheriting an older system rather than buying new.

Mesh Wi-Fi routers introduce a wrinkle worth knowing about before setup, not after. A base station connected to a mesh network node instead of the primary router sometimes struggles to hold a stable connection when the mesh system reshuffles which node handles which device, a known quirk with a few budget mesh brands. If your alerts seem to drop intermittently on a Wi-Fi-only system and cellular isn’t an option, connecting the base station directly to the primary router rather than a satellite node is worth trying before assuming the alarm hardware itself is faulty.

If you move often, cellular connectivity has a second benefit beyond outages: it works the moment you plug the base station in at a new address, with no need to reconfigure Wi-Fi credentials. If you’re self-monitoring on a tight budget and the alerts are only for your own awareness, Wi-Fi-only is a reasonable place to start, and you can add cellular later on most systems without replacing the whole kit.

Do I need cellular backup if I already have a home battery backup?

Not necessarily, but a home battery only solves the power half of the problem. If your internet service itself goes down, a Wi-Fi-only alarm still can’t reach the monitoring center even with full battery power to the router.
