Ground-floor windows next, especially any hidden from street view by a fence or hedge, since those get more attention from anyone actually casing a house.
Motion detectors work best in a corner of your main living space, angled to cover the most likely path from an entry point rather than pointed at a single door. Avoid pointing one at a window where sunlight or a heating vent will trigger false alarms, and keep pets in mind: most detectors have a pet-immune mode rated for animals under 40 to 50 pounds, but it needs to be turned on manually in most apps, it’s rarely the default.

What about connectivity during setup?
Confirm your Wi-Fi signal strength at the exact spot you’re placing the base station before mounting anything permanently, a surprising number of setup headaches trace back to a base station sitting just outside reliable router range. If you’ve picked a cellular-connected system instead, verify carrier signal at that same spot, since a cellular base station in a basement can struggle just like a phone does. What actually goes wrong during a first install
The app not finding the base station is the number one complaint in setup reviews, and it’s almost always a Bluetooth pairing step timing out rather than a defective unit. Restarting the app, moving your phone within a few feet of the base station, and toggling Bluetooth off and on tends to fix it faster than contacting support. A sensor that won’t pair on the first try is usually a pull-tab battery insulator still in place rather than a dead battery, worth checking before assuming you got a faulty part.
Sensors that trip constantly in the first day or two almost always trace back to placement, not a defect. A door sensor mounted slightly crooked so the two halves don’t align at rest will report open even when the door’s shut.
